In The Spotlight:  Some Recent Projects: Continued
Mr. & Mrs. Rickers, “pool to pond” project,
New Freedom, (York County), Pa.:
Mr. & Mrs. Ricker, “empty nesters”, decided it was time for their
underused, high maintenance swimming pool to go and be replaced with
something more interesting to be the focal point of their property.  They
envisioned perhaps a garden area that would incorporate a water feature,
a gazebo and colorful plantings.   Their decision was made to build a pond
came when they visited our display at the Garden Expo at the Farm Show
Arena in Harrisburg back in March.

After approving our design for the project, the first task was to remove
the in ground concrete pool which, in itself became a somewhat difficult
task, primarily because of the amount of rebar that was used when the
pool was constructed.  It took several days for our excavator to remove
the concrete and backfill the hole and then the actual installation phase of
the project began.  Our pond crew started working on the pond while our
installation crew began laying the irregular flagstone pathways and
planting.  As these phases were being done, the gazebo was delivered
and installed.  The last part of the project involved the installation of a
“Nightscaping” low voltage lighting system which included underwater
lights in the pond. The project was completed in about two weeks and has
completely transformed the appearance of the Ricker's back yard.

Excavator for the project was BN Excavating Co., Marietta
Long’s Park Art and Craft Fair:
Held annually over the Labor Day
weekend, this year’s art and craft fair
was “dumped on” by Mother Nature
however, the rain failed to dampen the
enthusiasm of those taking part in or
attending the show. The rain did keep
attendance down somewhat on Friday
and Saturday however, the clouds
broke up and the sun came out on
Sunday and the crowds returned en
masse.

The Long’s Park Art and Craft Fair
received a prestigious honor this year
as it was rated as the sixth best art
and craft fair of its kind in the United
States.  Proceeds from the art and
craft fair are used to help maintain
Long’s Park.  In all, over twenty
thousand people attended the event
this year.

All of us at Pontz Landscape Service,
Inc. feel honored to have been invited
back to take part in this wonderful
show and we would like to commend
everyone associated with the show for
the outstanding job they did once
again, especially under such difficult
weather conditions.  Congratulations
for a job well done!
The final exam:
Four college students decided to party the
weekend before final exams.  They had a
great time but they slept all day Sunday and
didn’t make it back in time for their first
exam on Monday morning.  They told the
professor that they had a flat tire and did not
have a spare tire which was the reason they
were late.  The professor agreed to let them
take their final exam the next morning.  He
placed them in separate rooms and handed
each a test with one question:  Which tire
went flat?
More On “Pondemonium”:
We reported in the last issue of our newsletter that two of our employees,
Daniel “Al” Jenkins and Casey Leemon, were going to be attending
“Pondemonium”, an intense, fifteen day educational program sponsored by
Aquascape Designs, Inc. and held each year near Chicago.  What made this
year’s program better than ever for Al and Casey is that they teamed up with
some employees of C.E. Pontz Sons Landscaping, also from Lancaster.
They flew out to Chicago on the same plane, stayed in adjacent hotel rooms
and shared a rental van.  This provided Al and Casey with the opportunity to
get acquainted with some fellow landscapers and it afforded them the
chance to learn how they constructed water gardens as well.  They also
teamed up with the C.E. Pontz employees and took part in a “pondless
waterfall” building contest together.  Al and Casey took part in four days of
the program which included three days of “Pond College”, which is
composed of numerous pond building classes mixed in with a variety of
marketing and business classes.

Both Al and Casey returned to Lancaster and reported that they not only
learned many new things about building water features but they also had a
great time and made many new friends and they are already looking forward
to next years “Pondemonium”.

On behalf of all of us at Pontz Landscape Service, Inc., we would like to
thank the employees of C.E. Pontz Sons Landscaping for inviting our
employees to travel with them and in particular, Mr. Adrian Kapp, company
President, for making all the travel arrangements for the trip.
